Reading the Play

Reading the Play

In Geraldton, Western Australia, HubCap is helping local men develop their reading and writing skills through their Reading the Play program.

Working closely with other local community service providers such as Housing First Support Services and local sporting clubs, the one-on-one program is proving effective in reaching disadvantaged community members and expanding the program’s impact.

Reading the Play provides one-on-one reading and writing support for men who have complex and often traumatic experiences with learning environments, and therefore feel more comfortable in a relaxed learning environment.

Malcolm connected into the program when, at 58, he made the decision to learn to read. Malcolm had struggled since meninghitis as a child caused brain damage. His tutors were impressed by Malcolm’s dedication and perseverance – particularly when Malcolm successfully acted as MC for a Hub Cap event in late 2024. Malcolm read his MC notes in front of a huge crowd on the night.
