D’Shay McCoy – Northern Territory

Being in a supportive classroom environment, with support from the other students has given D’Shay the motivation to pursue new goals. She has decided that she now wants to go on to become an Aboriginal Health Practitioner. And, her passion for this is encouraging others to join her.

D’Shay experienced racial bullying in school, being one of only four Aboriginal students at the school. She ended up dropping out in Year 10 and working at a café. Despite these past negative experiences with education, D’Shay participates in class, always finishes her work and is confidently completing her Certificate III in Community Services.

The Young Mums Strong Mums program has had a significant positive impact on D’Shay’s life. Through the program, she has re-engaged with education, developed clearer goals, and gained the confidence to plan for her future.

She is now motivated to continue studying, obtain meaningful employment, and achieve financial independence so she can support herself and her child. Her interest in becoming an Aboriginal Health Practitioner reflects her growing sense of purpose and desire to help adults access and manage their healthcare.

The program has supported her personal growth, educational pathway, career aspirations, and ability to contribute positively to her family and community. If awarded a scholarship, D’Shay wants to continue her studies by undertaking a two-year traineeship to become an Aboriginal Health Practitioner. This pathway will help her develop the skills and experience needed to support adults with their healthcare needs, gain meaningful employment, and provide financial support for herself and her child.
